Tea Fights Heart Disease
According to a Dutch study published this fall, drinking tea may help prevent
coronary artery disease, especially in women.
In the study of nearly 3,500 people in the Netherlands, people who consumed
one to two cups of tea daily lowered their risk of severe aortic arteriosclerosis, a narrowing of the arteries caused by a build-up of fat and
other substances on the inner walls, by 46 percent. At four cups per day, the
risk dropped by 69 percent.
The scientists behind the study attributed the benefits to the flavonoids in
tea, which act as antioxidants, neutralizing harmful chemicals that damage
cells and lead to illnesses such as heart attacks. The protective effect of
tea was more pronounced in women than in men, for reasons the scientists are
as yet unable to discern.
The release of this study supports the evidence of a report published earlier
in 1999 by Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School which
demonstrated that people drinking one or more cups of tea a day reduced their
risk of heart attack by 44 percent.
